Trip Description
Day 1: Arrival & Exploration
Morning Ferry Ride Take the early morning Catalina Express ferry from Long Beach or San Pedro to Two Harbors (closer to Emerald Bay than Avalon). From Two Harbors, you can either hike in (about 8 miles along the Trans-Catalina Trail, gorgeous but strenuous with pack gear) or arrange a short boat ride to Emerald Bay Camp.
- Camp Setup Once at Emerald Bay, settle into a campsite or tent cabin if you reserved one. The camp is tucked into a protected cove, with some of the clearest waters on Catalina, perfect for snorkeling or kayaking. • Afternoon Adventure Rent snorkeling gear or kayaks to explore the bay. Emerald Bay is famous for its giant kelp forests, Garibaldi fish, and calm turquoise water. You can also hike short trails around the camp with overlooks of the Pacific.
- Sunset & Evening Cook at camp or join a prepared group meal (if you’re at Boy Scout camp facilities or private group booking). Watch the sun set behind the rugged Catalina cliffs, then enjoy a campfire on the beach if fires are permitted (some campsites have designated pits). The night skies here are exceptionally dark, perfect for stargazing.
Day 2: Hike & Departure
- Morning Hike After breakfast, head out for a hike. You could take the Cedar Grove Trail or part of the Trans-Catalina Trail for sweeping views of the island’s rugged coast. Another option is hiking to Parsons Landing, a secluded beach about 2.7 miles away.
- Beach & Water Time Spend the late morning swimming, paddleboarding, or just relaxing on the beach at Emerald Bay. The water is calmer in the morning and great for spotting marine life. • Pack Up & Return Break camp around midday. If you hiked in, plan your return hike early to catch the afternoon ferry from Two Harbors back to the mainland. If you arranged a boat shuttle, you’ll have more flexibility and can squeeze in a last swim before heading out.
Trip Vibe: This is a very outdoorsy trip—part rustic camping, part ocean adventure. Think clear blue water, starry skies, and hikes with rugged island views.
